James Ijames, TFM ’05, has received a 2022 Pulitzer Prize in the category of drama for Fat Ham, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set at a family barbecue in the South. Originally a filmed production released by the Wilma Theater on Broad Street in Philadelphia, Fat Ham is now running Off-Broadway at the Public Theater through June 12. Ijames’ previous awards include the 2015 Terrance McNally New Play Award, the 2017 Whiting Award, a 2019 Kesselring Prize, a 2020 Steinberg Prize, four Barrymore Awards and a 2015 Pew playwriting fellowship.

Ijames has described his play Fat Ham as “a witty take on Hamlet where the only death is the patriarchy.”
