Qualifications 

Students who are candidates for the master’s option of the health policy and health services research program will meet the following qualifications.  

• Currently enrolled in the Health Policy and Health Services Research PhD program 

• Completed a minimum of 27 credits of didactic course work, including all required didactic courses in the Health Policy and Health Services Research PhD program 

• Maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher in each didactic course 

• Are within the seven-year PhD program time limit 

• Are in good standing with all university requirements and obligations 

Health Policy and Health Services Research MS Learning Outcomes 

After obtaining the Master of Science in Health Policy and Health Services Research, students will be able to 

• explain public health history, philosophy and values;  

• identify the core functions of public health and the ;  

• discuss the role of quantitative and qualitative methods and sciences in describing and assessing a population’s health;  

• identify major causes and trends of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. or other communities relevant to the school or program; 

• discuss the science of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in population health, including health promotion, screening and more;  

• explain the critical importance of evidence in advancing public health knowledge;  

• discuss the effects of environmental factors on a population’s health; 

• discuss the biological and genetic factors that affect a population’s health;  

• identify the behavioral and psychological factors that affect a population’s health;  

• explain the social, political and economic determinants of health and how they contribute to population health and health inequities;  

• discuss how globalization affects the global burdens of disease; and

• share an ecological perspective on the connections among human health, animal health and ecosystem health (e.g., ).
