Generally, the Environmental Engineering Department specializes in

  • research into waste and wastewater treatment,
  • emerging contaminants and
  • membrane synthesis and separation.

The (WET Center) is funded by the National Science Foundation and promotes research into innovative technologies to mitigate emerging and traditional contaminants. There are currently more than 30 industrial and government members of the WET Center. also sponsors sustainability-oriented research and initiatives to improve outreach and engagement.

You鈥檒l have the opportunity to collaborate on research projects with faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as members of other departments. Interdisciplinary research draws on fields like biochemistry, molecular biology and chemistry. Recent studies have involved

  • cultivating plants on polluted land ();
  • development of innovative solid and hazardous waste management and treatment options (WET Center); and
  • chemical detection (Renewable Energy Lab in collaboration with the ).

These cross-disciplinary opportunities allow graduate students to take creative, innovative approaches to their research.

Research Funding

The College of Engineering had more than $14 million in active research in 2016鈥�2017. With external support from prestigious organizations including聽the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Navy聽and the American Heart Association, faculty members of 51吃瓜网鈥檚 College of Engineering are engaging in advanced research. Graduate students will find multiple opportunities to partner with faculty on innovative projects and聽perform experiments.聽.

In 2016, the National Science Foundation placed 51吃瓜网 among the top 100 in terms of research expenditures, which amounted to $242 million. .

In 2016, 51吃瓜网 was elevated to an R1 institution for聽鈥渧ery high research spending and doctorate production鈥� by the .聽51吃瓜网鈥檚 research enterprise distinguishes itself through its focus on community, and using advances in technology to make a positive impact on people鈥檚 lives.
