Scholarships & Financial AidÌýÌý

Students at the School of Podiatric Medicine may apply for scholarships, loans and university funding from a variety of sources to help pay for their degree. Approximately 90% of students receive some form of financial aid from TUSPM, which offers 51³Ô¹ÏÍø fund-administered scholarships and non-51³Ô¹ÏÍø scholarships to incoming and current students who meet the criteria.

General scholarships are open to students in all years. TUSPM also offers 51³Ô¹ÏÍø fund-administered scholarships to students in a specific class year.Ìý

First-year Scholarships
  • James F. Donovan, DPM Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe fund is created in memory of James F. Donovan, DPM, who for more than 30 years was the embodiment of General Podiatry Practice Ownership. The fund will be used to provide scholarships for first-year TUSPM students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Allen E. Forsythe Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1999 by a bequest from Allen Forsythe, DPMÌý’37, to provide scholarships for incoming podiatry students who have excellent academic credentials and financial need.
  • Georgia Student Scholar Aid Fund:ÌýEstablished by E. Dalton McGlamry, DPMÌý’54, to provide scholarships for first-year podiatry students from the state of Georgia who demonstrate leadership and financial need.
  • Goldsmith-Greenfield Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by the Goldsmith-Greenfield Foundation to provide scholarships for first-year podiatry students who have excelled as undergraduates and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Gilbert Master, DPM ’38,ÌýScholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by Bernard Master to provide scholarships to first-year podiatry students based on academic excellence and involvement with school activities.
Second-year Scholarships
  • Mary Kay Akerman Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide an annual scholarship to a high-ranking second-year student enrolled in the school who is a resident of Western Pennsylvania.
  • Lynn Catapano, POD ’86,ÌýMemorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by family, friends and classmates to provide scholarships for second-year podiatry students.
  • Class of 1989 Clinical Instruments Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1989 by members of the Class of 1989 to provide for scholarships to help second-year podiatry students pay for clinical instruments.
  • G. Elmer Harford, DPM ’32, Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1993 through a bequest by G. Elmer Hartford, ’32, ’34, to provide scholarships for second-year podiatry students who excel in anatomical sciences.
  • Herbert Rothfeld, DPM Scholarship:ÌýEstablished in 1998 to provide scholarships for second-year podiatry students who have the highest grade point average in anatomy.
  • Thomas S. UnionÌýSr. and Family Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1995 by Thomas S. UnionÌýJr., DPMÌý’68, and Joseph M. Union, DPMÌý’74, to provide scholarships to second-year podiatry students who are residents of Georgia and demonstrate leadership, high academic ability and financial need.
  • Gartha E. WolfeÌýMemorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1989 through a bequest from Wolfe to provide scholarships for second-year podiatry students in the top half of the class who demonstrate financial need.
  • Elias andÌýKiki Vekkos Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to award $2,000 annually to a second-year podiatry student with financial need who is enrolled in TUSPM and who has overcome personal hardship. Established by Renee VekkosÌýandÌýLeonard Vekkos.
Third-year Scholarships
  • Richard E. Adler Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1991 by Richard E. Adler, DPMÌý’77, to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students based on academics and community service.
  • Briskin Sitkoff Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1993 by Harold Sitkoff, DPMÌý’41, and Irma Briskin Sitkoff in memory of Arthur Briskin, DPM ’43, and Marjorie Cohen Sitkoff, DPMÌý’44, and in 1995 by Irma Briskin Sitkoff in memory of Harold SitkoffÌýto provide scholarships for third-year students in the School of Podiatric Medicine based on financial need and academic excellence.
  • Frank BrexÌýMemorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2017 by Lawrence A. LevineÌýin memory of FrankÌýBrex. Purpose of the fund is to provide an annual scholarship to a third-year student at the School of Podiatric Medicine with financial need.
  • J. David DerrÌýMemorialÌýScholarship:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by a bequest from J. David Derr, DPMÌý’58, to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students who have excelled academically, have a record of service to the School of Podiatric Medicine and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Isadore P. Forman Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2010 by Lawrence A. Levine, DPM ’71, in memory of Isadore P. Forman, DPM ’43, to provide scholarships for nontraditional, third-year students in the School of Podiatric Medicine who have financial need.
  • Betty Souder Frese Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1999 by Herman Frese, SBM ’49, to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students who have excelled academically and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Charles W. GibleyÌýJr.ÌýMemorial Award Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2015 by Lawrence A. Levine in memory of Charles W. GibleyÌýJr.Ìýto provide awards for third-year students in the School of Podiatric Medicine who have excellent academic credentials and have financial need.
  • Leon E. KehrÌýScholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1999 by Leon E. Kehr, DPMÌý’53, to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students in the top half of their class who have been involved in community activities and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Charles,ÌýPODÌý’23, ’34, and Alice, SBM ’27, Krausz Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by Charles Krausz,Ìýformer dean and professor emeritus of the School of Podiatric Medicine, and friends in 1992 to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students who excel academically, demonstrate financial need and provide service to the school.
  • Dr. and Mrs. William Long Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by William Long. Scholarship to be awarded to a third-year student who is a member of the Student National Podiatric Medical Association.
  • Edwin B. MartinÌýJr., Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1991 by family, friends and colleagues to provide scholarships to third-year podiatry students, in the top half of their class, who have served in campus organizations and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Dr. Harold D. Schoenhaus Scholarship Fund: Established by Harold Schoenhaus to be awarded to a third-year student who excels in biomechanics and pathomechanics.
  • Bohdan Terleckyj Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1997 by friends and colleagues of Bohdan Terleckyj, CLA ’70, MED ’75, a former faculty member, to provide scholarships for third-year podiatry students who have excelled in microbiology and who demonstrate financial need.
Fourth-year Scholarships
  • James E. BatesÌýPresidential Scholarship Fund: Established in 1991 by friends and colleagues of James Bates, DPMÌý’46, former president of the School of Podiatric Medicine, to provide scholarships for podiatry students in their fourth-year who have an outstanding record of academic accomplishment and service to the school.
  • Dr. John Buckholz and Dr. Harold Vogler Surgical Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1991 to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students based on clinical qualifications and recommendations from the surgery department.
  • Centrella Family Memorial Endowed Scholarship:ÌýEstablished by the Delaware Podiatric Medical Association and the Centrella Family in memory of Louis D. Centrella, DPMÌý’67, and Michael L. CentrellaÌýJr., DPM ’76, to provide scholarships for fourth-year students with financial need who have excelled in the study of anatomical sciences and surgery anatomy, and who have contributed to the science of anatomy through research or publication.
  • Tammy Clemmons Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2001 by Tammy Clemmons’ classmates in her memoryÌý to provide scholarships to fourth-year podiatry students who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need, with preference to active members of the Student National Podiatric Medical Association.
  • Foot and Ankle Associates of North Carolina Scholarship Fund in Honor of Shirley Thompson and Mary Kinard: Established in 2005 by Stephen Kinard, DPMÌý’94, and Clarence M. Stewart, DPMÌý’95, to provide scholarships for upcoming fourth-year students enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine who are active members of the Student National Podiatric Medical Association.
  • Richard DiNapoli, DPM ’85,ÌýMemorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1994 to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students who exhibit commitment to surgical treatment.
  • James V. Ganley, DPM ’54, Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by colleagues, family and friends to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students who have demonstrated accomplishments in podopediatrics.
  • William M. Goldfarb, DPM ’48, Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by friends and family of William M. Goldfarb, DPMÌý’48, to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students who demonstrate service to the School and financial need.
  • Stanley Grode, DPM ’79, Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1991 by the family, friendsÌýand colleagues of Stanley Grode, DPM ’79, to provide scholarships for fourth-year students with financial need who have excelled in the study of the anatomical sciences, and who have contributed to the science of anatomy through research or publication.
  • Richard C. Haas II Award Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2009 by William D. FarrettÌýJr.,ÌýPOD ’95, and Sheila Kimble-Haas in memory of Richard C. Haas,ÌýPOD ’​95, to provide awards for students enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine entering their fourth yearÌýwho have financial need and who have exhibited significant academic achievement, with preference given to students who have shown an interest in helping underserved populations in the U.S.
  • Maureen L. Mattiacci Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished byÌýJohn Scanlon, the purpose of the fund is to award $2,000 annually to a fourth-year student who is enrolled in TUSPM.ÌýPreference will be given to a student who is involved in and dedicated to community service and outreach, educating and improving the perception of podiatrists and podiatric medicine.ÌýAcademic achievement or class ranking shall not be used as the sole criteria for awarding the scholarship.
  • E. Dalton McGlamry, DPM ’54, Scholarship Fund: Established in 1982 by colleagues, friends and former residents to provide scholarships for fourth-year students with financial need who are in the top 20%Ìýof their class in the first three years of surgery.
  • Louis, DPM ’35, and Ruth Newman Scholarship Fund: Established in 1993 by Andrew Newman to scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students with financial need and who excel in surgery.
  • David C. Novicki FACFAS Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide an annual award to fourth-year students with financial need who have an interest in pursuing a career in foot and ankle surgery. Each year, oneÌý$2,000 award or two $1,000 scholarships shall be distributed to qualified students. Academic achievement or class ranking shall not be used as the sole criteria for awarding the fund.
  • Kate L. Paine Memorial Scholarship in Peripheral Vascular Disease Fund: Established in 1988 by Leslie A. Hess, DPMÌý’79, in honor of a bequest from Kate Paine to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students.
  • J. E. Smaha Memorial Scholarship Fund: Established in 1986 by Paul G. Smaha, DPMÌý’68, to provide scholarships for fourth-year podiatry students based on academics, leadership and financial need.
  • Richard G. Stuempfle, DPM '55, Endowed Scholarship Fund: This fund provides a scholarship award for a fourth-year student in the School of Podiatric Medicine who has demonstrated a combination of outstanding academic achievement and financial need.
General Scholarships
  • BAKO Excellence in Podiatric Dermatology Endowed Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2014 by Bradley W. Bakotic, the purpose of the fund is to provide an annual scholarship for the student enrolled in the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø School of Podiatric Medicine achieving the highest grade point average in dermatology, while simultaneously exhibiting superior acumen in clinical dermatology.
  • Bako Medical Education Foundation Endowed Scholarship:ÌýThe BMEF has established an endowed scholarship in dermatology for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students showing exemplary work, promiseÌýand excellent clinical skills in dermatology.
  • Brandywine Podiatry Endowed Scholarship:ÌýEstablished in 2017 by Christopher L. SavageÌýto provide scholarships to a third- or fourth-year student or students with financial need who had mentored a first- or second-year student(s). Academic achievement or class ranking shall not be used as criteria for awarding scholarships.
  • Aisha S. ChaudhryÌýand Iftikhar M. Chaudhry Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished 2013 by Aisha S. ChaudhryÌýand Iftikhar M. ChaudhryÌýto provide scholarships for students enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine who have financial need.
  • Dr. Aisha Chaudhry and Dr. Ammar Saymeh Endowed Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the school with financial need. The ideal candidate should be actively involved in the TUSPM community and show significant interest in both forefoot and rearfoot reconstructive surgery.
  • Podiatry Class of 2017 Award:ÌýThe purpose of this fund is to provide an annual award to an individual student who has demonstrated academic achievement while also demonstrating a true passion for TUSPM and its community.
  • Podiatry Content Connection Endowed Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to a third- or fourth-year student enrolled in the school, with a preference for individuals who aspire to establish their own individual practice at the conclusion of their residency. Academic achievement or class ranking shall not be used as criteria for awarding scholarships.
  • John P. Dahdah, DPM ’81, Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2014 by John P. DahdahÌýto provide a merit scholarship to a student enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine.
  • T. George Downs Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1991 by T. George Downs to provide scholarships for podiatry students with financial need.
  • Dr. Gallman-Stelmach Endowed Scholarship Fund: Established in 2004 by M. Doris Stelmach, DPMÌý’43, in memory of her husbandÌýW. Peter Stelmach,Ìýher brother Edmund F. Gallman and her sonÌýPeter StelmachÌýto provide annual scholarships to third- or fourth-year School of Podiatric Medicine students with financial need who show and interest in, and aptitude for, the study of metabolic diseases.
  • William L. Goldfarb Foundation Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2006 by the William L. Goldfarb Foundation for Education and Research of the Lower ExtremitiesÌýInc. to provide scholarships for second-, third-Ìýor fourth-year students enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine who have good academic standing and financial need.
  • E. Lewis Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1994 by the family and friends of Lewis Gray to provide scholarships for second- and third-year podiatry students based on academic excellence and financial need.
  • The Catherine Hand, DPM '49, Endowment Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2015 by Catherine HandÌýto provide annual scholarships to one or more students with financial need who excel in their courses at the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø School of Podiatric Medicine.
  • Felix A. Hess Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by Leslie A. Hess, DPMÌý’79, to provide scholarships for podiatry students who are in the top half of the class and who demonstrate financial need.
  • Ruth Hess, EDU ’78, Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by Leslie A. Hess,ÌýDPM ’79,Ìýto provide scholarships for podiatry students who demonstrate academic excellence in biochemistry and financial need.
  • Leonard Hymes, DPM ’41, Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1984 by family and friends to provide scholarships for graduating podiatry students with humanistic skills.
  • Frieda and John Juda Memorial Endowed Scholarship:ÌýEstablished in 2016 in memory of his parents by former assistantÌýprofessor in the DepartmentÌýof Medicine Erwin J. Juda, DPM ’82,Ìýto provide a scholarship to a third- or fourth-year student with financial need who has excelled in the study of pharmacology, and who has contributed to the science of pharmacology through research or publication.
  • William Kalellis Scholarship: Established in 2011 and provided for by a 1998 trust established by William Kalellis to fund a scholarship for students of the School of Podiatric Medicine.
  • Marc A. KarpoÌýMemorial Endowed Scholarship:ÌýEstablished in 2016 upon the death of Marc Karpo by Bonni Karpo, the student government and TUSPM faculty and supported by family, colleagues and friends. The faculty will make the determination on the awarding of the scholarship.
  • Edwin J., DPM ’41,Ìýand Helen L. Kay Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2005 by a bequest from Helen L. Kay to provide scholarships for podiatry students with financial need.
  • Dr. and Mrs. William Long Scholarship Fund: Established by William Long. Scholarship to be awarded to a third-year student who is a member of the Diversity Inclusion Community Engagement (DICE) Club.
  • Kevin Mahan Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1992 by the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine in memory of Kevin Mahan, the brother of Kieran Mahan, DPMÌý’80, former dean and vice president of academic affairs, to provide scholarships for podiatry students with exemplary standards and goals who demonstrate financial need.
  • Bernard and Susan Master Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1993 by Bernard Master to provide scholarships for students in the School of Podiatric Medicine.
  • Leona Master Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1993 by Bernard Master to provide scholarships for students in the School of Podiatric Medicine.
  • John A. Mattiacci, DPM ’70, Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2005 by Dean John A. and Maureen Mattiacci to provide scholarships for students with financial need who are enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine.ÌýSpecial consideration will be given to children of union workers.
  • Maureen L. Mattiacci Scholarship Fund: Established by John Scanlon, the purpose of the fund is to award $2,000 annually to a fourth- year student who is enrolled in TUSPM.Ìý Preference will be given to a student who is involved in and dedicated to community service and outreach, educating and improving the perception of podiatrists and podiatric medicine.Ìý Academic achievement or class ranking shall not be used as the sole criteria for awarding the scholarship.
  • James and Katharine McNerney Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2010 by James E. McNerney, POD ’70, to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the School of Podiatric Medicine who have financial need.
  • New England Endowed Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2006 by the School of Podiatric Medicine alumni in New England to provide scholarships for students who have financial need and who have exhibited significant academic achievement with preference for students who have legal residence or spent a substantial amount of time living in New England.
  • LeGrande NewmanÌýScholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1995 by family, friends and colleagues of LeGrandeÌýNewman, former associate dean of student affairs, to provide scholarships for podiatry students with financial need.
  • John J. OrlandoÌýJr.ÌýScholarship: Established to be awarded to a third- or fourth-year student who excels in biomechanics.
  • Paul R. QuintavalleÌýSr., DPM ’40, Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished by family, friends, and colleagues of Paul Quintavalle, former chairÌýof the board of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, to provide scholarships for podiatry students based on academic excellence, financial need, compassion to patients and commitment to the community.
  • Rebound Medical LLCÌýScholarship: Established to be awarded to a student who is enrolled in TUSPM with demonstrated financial need.ÌýAcademic achievement or class rankings shall not be used as the sole criteria for this award.
  • Dr. and Mrs. Richard R. Roccapriore Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2000 by Richard R. Roccapriore, DPM ’53, to provide scholarships for podiatry students with financial need.
  • Dr. Fred Rosencrantz Anatomy Scholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide an annual scholarship of $2,000 to a student with demonstrated financial need who is enrolled in the School. Preference shall be given to students who excel in lower extremity anatomy.
  • Frank H. Rubin, DPM ’43, Memorial Fund in Podiatric Medicine: Established in 2004 by Gladyce F. Rubin to honor the memory of her husband, who was widely respected for his dedication to podiatric medicine and the welfare and dignity of his patients, to provide an annual award to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in podiatry surgery, and an annual scholarship to a third- or fourth-year student with financial need who demonstrates outstanding attributes of performance, compassion, enthusiasm and commitment to patient services.
  • Dr. and Mrs. George K. Schacterle Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 2002 by George K.Ìýand SoniaÌýSchacterle, DPM ’51, to provide a scholarship based on academic excellence and financial need. If a student considered for this scholarship is in his or her thirdÌýor fourth year and has demonstrated an interest in teaching and/or research, then preference shall be given to that candidate.
  • School of Podiatric Medicine Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship and Annual Award:ÌýEstablished in 2004 by the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø School of Podiatric Medicine Alumni Association to provide an annual scholarship to a student with financial need and to provide for an annual award to an outstanding graduating student.
  • Jay SchnitzerÌýScholarship Fund:ÌýThe purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the school who are involved in service at the university.
  • Dr. and Mrs. Jack Schreffler Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished 1999 by Jack M. Schreffler, DPM, ’56 to provide scholarships for podiatry students who demonstrate financial need.
  • Shirley Seave Memorial Scholarship Fund:ÌýEstablished in 1999 by Edwin Seave, DPMÌý’43, LAW ’51, to provide scholarships for podiatry students who demonstrate academic ability, leadership and financial need.

  • Shital SharmaÌýand Siddhartha SharmaÌýScholarship Fund: The purpose of this fund is to award an annual scholarship to a student with financial need who is enrolled in TUSPM.

Each year, TUSPM students are awarded a number of private non-51³Ô¹ÏÍø fund-administered awards not identified on this page. Students are encouraged to visit their email accounts or the for notification of such opportunities.

Incoming first-year students will be considered for scholarships as part of the application process and need not apply.ÌýÌý

Direct Loans are low-interest rate loans for students insured by the Department of Education (lender) to assist in paying for educational costs after high school. There are two types of loans offered under the direct loan program: Unsubsidized and the Grad PLUSÌýloan.Ìý

Direct Unsubsidized Loan

This loan is designed to provide additional funds to the student when expenses are not met by other educational funding. A first- and second-year professional student can borrow up to $40,500;Ìýthird and fourth year, up to $47,167 annually. The interest rate is fixed at 6.8%. Interest accrues from the time funds are issued. Interest payments, however, do not need to be made until the loan goes into repayment.Ìý

Direct Graduate PLUS Loan

Additional funding may be available to students whose cost of attendance is not met by other means of funding. This loan provides students with a fixed interest rate of 7.9%. A Grad PLUS application must be completed each academic year if interested. A credit decision will be made upon completion of the application.Ìý

Health Professions Student Loan (HPSL)

This Federal loan program provides low-interest (5% fixed) loans to students in need. No interest accrues while the student is in school. These loans are provided from revolving funds at TUSPM and are awarded through the Office of Student Financial Services to students with demonstrated exceptional financial need. Income information regarding the student’s parents is required if the student wishes to be considered for this loan.

Federal Work-study

51³Ô¹ÏÍø offers work-study as part of the financial aid package to students who meet the criteria.
